BARRANCO DE POQUEIRA'S VILLAGES

In Barranco de Poqueira there are three gorgeous villages, which are: Bubión, Capileira and Pampaneira.

CAPILEIRA

The highest of the three villages in the Barranco de Poqueira, at 1,436m, Capileira is a good base for walking in the gorge itself or up to the Sierra Nevada. Its twisting, steep streets are dotted with many springs gushing with fresh mountain water and there are superb views of the Poqueira gorge and the Sierra Nevada everywhere you look. With a population of 600, it′s also the largest of the three villages in the Poqueira gorge – the others being Bubión and Pampaneira – and it has a good choice of accommodation and bars.

BUBIÓN

Halfway between Capileira and Pampaneira in the Poqueira gorge is the sleepy village of Bubión, which like its neighbours is surrounded by magnificent views of the often snow-capped Sierra Nevada peaks and the Alpujarras.

PAMPANEIRA

One of a trio of popular and picturesque whitewashed villages, Pampaneira – like its neighbours Bubión and Capileira – hugs the steep slopes of a lush river gorge, the Barranco de Poqueira. Pampaneira is the lowest of the three, at just over 1,000m.

ARCHITECTURE

Poqueira's villages' architecture is simple, due to the historic isolation of the zone, easy finding materials in near zones were used. The easiest way to build is based on finding plain areas over the mountainside. Each dwelling is supported by the house below. The streets are steep and the houses are staggered arranged with flat slate roofs. The houses are completely adapted to the mountainous land. One of the best techniques of taking advantages of the land are the “tinaos alpujarreños”, which are characterized of creating new spaces.

GASTRONOMY

The ham is the most important ingredient of the Alpujarran dishes.

PAMPANEIRA

In Pampaneira some dishes that we can emphasize are:

- The Alpujarran soup: it cosists of a rich ham stock with a diced hard boiled egg, almonds and cured ham

bits.

- The stew “a la gitanilla” : it contains white beans, green beans, potato ham hock and a bit of red pepper.

- The “migas camperas”: To make the migas they use hard wheat flour, and

then they are generally accompanied by olive oil, salt, garlic and pepper. The dish is topped with

thick Spanish bacon, chorizo, and black pudding.

-The Alpujarran dish: is a comboplate that consists of fried eggs, different types of Spanish

sausages and cuts of pork, and potatoes with pepper. This recipe is very famous all over the Alpujarra.

In the region of Pampaneira also there can be tasted some desserts like:

- The Moorish sweets.

- The Pampaneira's bread rolls.
